Hi Polly,

That is an excellent application of this technique!
It certainly keeps the number of landing pages/form pages under control. :)

I have been using the same technique to force email capture before showing one block on my landing pages for visitors who came to the site 2 times only! In addition, I use _utmZ cookie to check visitor source and show the right telephone number which allows me to track calls and attrubute leads to the right marketing channel.

Hi Shilpa,

It's odd that it would show Google as the source for all three paid marketing platforms.
Can you post an example of a DCMP code you would use?

Most likely utm_source is necessary but I'll let you know after looking at an example DCMP code.

Hi Rehan,

One quick question. I have been using the DCMP codes to track my ppc campaigns. I am running it across different SEM platforms like Adwords, Bing & Yahoo SEM. However, the ppc keyword filter I created (as suggested by you) shows the Source as Google for all the keywords that are being tracked here. It doesn't segregate the Yahoo SEM from Bing & Adwords. Is there any string I can pass to help me track this data as well. Or do I have to use the utm source in my ads & only then would it track the data? It would be great if you could help :(

Terence,

There are many blog posts out there that show how to track Yahoo Search Marketing (YSM) inside of Google Analytics. A quick search on Google or Yahoo will give you what you need.

My advice is to focus on your data attribution issues first, otherwise your YSM tracking efforts might not bear fruit.

Hi Shilpa,

The content network is little trickier.
If you were a publisher via AdSense, there is a Google Analytics integration option from the interface.
Most of us aren't publishers of ads so we have to go with less elegant options.

There are posts out there that show how to get some data about the content network in a separate profile.
For example, this post by <a href="http://www.ga-experts.com/blog/2006/11/how-to-assess-search-content-network-advertising-using-google-analytics/" rel="nofollow">GA Experts</a> and another by <a href="http://www.roirevolution.com/blog/2008/01/content_network_exposed.html" rel="nofollow">ROI Revolution</a>.

Hello Terence,

No filters will help you track google or yahoo ad systems until the data issue you described (all traffic showing up as direct) is resolved.

Once the data start coming in properly, the filters from this post or other similar posts will work just fine.

Hi, Thanks for this post. I have created both the filters in GA for my site as suggested above.
My Adwords account consists of both search & content campaigns. So, while checking the GA data I saw that the search campaigns are being tracked fine. i.e. the GA data shows the keywords/search terms the user is looking for in the keyword column. My concern is with the tracking of my content campaigns. It displays the "content + URL" in the keywords column for a few campaigns, while just the term "content with out a URL" for a few others. Why is that so? Is there a way to find out what the URL's for these content campaigns are?

Regards,
Shilpa

Since the "lead source" field is changing from "Quote Request" to "Web Referral", it's an indicator that the analytics code is actually working, but the issue appears to be in attributing the correct source i.e. in the test you ran, the lead source should have changed to "Google AdWords" (not "Web Referral". We have seen cases where the site has page redirects or issues with the URL parameters, so AdWords visits appear as direct or referral. Please take a look and let us know what you find and if you have any other questions or comments.

Thanks,
Feras

Hello Terence,

Since one profile without filters is showing all sources as direct, the problem has nothing to do with the PPC keywords profile.

I would look for things on your website that can break GA tracking, such as poorly implemented tracking code or analytics-unfriendly redirects such as meta refreshes.

Having an issue where we are only seeing one of our campaigns being brought into salesforce GA. We've had this running for about a year and only one of our campaigns registers in GA's states within salesforce. I tested last week:

1.) Clicked on one of our Ads for a specific campaign
2.) Landed on our site > browsed to our lead form and submitted.
3.) Lead came in as "Quote Request" - a few minutes later GA changed the lead source to "Web Referral".

Why doesn't the campaign register?

I'm wondering if you have another profile that has no filters on it.
If yes, then does it also report all traffic sources as direct?

Hello Rehan,

I juz added these two filter for my webstie, but finally nothing happens on the report.
Recently, i am worrying about the inability of reporting yahoo adwords. because all traffic sources are come from "direct".

I know it is impossible for all sources coming from "direct", would you mind analyzing this situation for me?

Thanks Ophir,

yes, the new MCV is an awesome feature but in regards to content grouping I feel it will be very hard to do any path analysis and Goal tracking using the MCV (just to mention few). If you have any case studies, please share with us.

Feras

Awesome - I'm just planning the build of a website that will encourage people to recommend a friend and get a great reward. Having this facility on the "Recommend A Friend" page will be amazing

I'm guessing that customizing messages is really easy, e.g.

"You've recommended X friends - recommend 10 and recieve our special bonus gift"

Thanks for the info

Thanks for your comment.

As far as scrolling, yes, and the post made a reference to an article by CX Partners about the other views on "above the fold". I don't think we should be obsessed with "above the fold", and yes users to scroll, especially when you have quality content that will entice users to read more (I know our creative director can elaborate on this one very well :). But we do see a whole lot of sites where some of the most important elements, CTAs, etc. are buried way down the page for no reason.

And regarding the centered designs, as many of the <a href="http://googlecode.blogspot.com/2009/12/introducing-google-browser-size.html" rel="nofollow">comments </a>on the original Google post, it would be a nice enhancement for the developers to add, among few other tweaks. We have provided some feedback to the Google developers, and I suggest you give them your input as well at browser-size-external-feedback @ google dot com.

I think one takeaway here is to encourage the creative/design/usability team to work with the analytics folks with a common goal to use data and available tools to improve the overall user experience and site usefulness (and increase conversions/leads/sales/profits along the way :)).

Thanks,
Feras

Hi Les,

Yes it does, if you have links on the press release to your site..

Let's say your press release was picked by cnn.com or bbc.com, this hack allows you to track all visits to your site from links in the press release. All activities after that inside your site by the such visitors will be credited to:
Source = cnn.com or bbc.com
Medium = press_release

PPC has been proved to be a very effective way of campaigning for the advertising companies. Through the PPC model they can actually prompt visitors to view their portals, which in future can turn them into customers and clients. Just by publishing a small advertisement on the right hand side of a website, they are ensuring a high rate of traffic to their own portals.

I am just wondering if this methodology will also allow tracking of where (for example) someone who clicks through from CNN goes after they hit the News Release page.

2. did you notice Browser Size doesn't take in account centered layouts? Is your "Get Noticed" headline being seen by 99, 98 or 95% of users?

Hi Dan,

Thank you for your comment.

There are many aspects to improving conversions, and products like Clicktale, CrazyEgg and others can be used for their intended purposes (mouse movements, heatmaps, etc.).

You still need an enterprise level web analytics solution such as Google Analytics to provide you with a strong data/reporting foundation along with the host of <a href="http://www.e-nor.com/blog/index.php/web-analytics/google-analytics-powerful-flexible-and-intelligent/" rel="nofollow">advanced analytics capabilities</a> that Google Analytics continues to <a href="http://www.e-nor.com/blog/index.php/web-analytics/new-google-analytics-features-annotations-additional-advanced-segementation-options-api-more/" rel="nofollow">offer</a>.

It's also worth mentioning that Clicktale's own website is using Google Analytics :).

Thanks,
Feras

To optimise conversions you should employ a web analytics provider such as clicktale to show you how your customers enagage eith your site. From the results fo the aggregate behaviours, real time videos and heatmaps you can mend any deficiencies and make it easier for visitors to your site to become buyers.

Hi Mike,

Follow these steps:

- Create New Profile (ex. Name: Tire Results by Size Profile)
- Create New Filter (Tire Results Filter)
- Filter Type: Custom filter -> Advanced
- Field A -> Extract A: Request URI: /Tire_Results_By_Size/
- Output To -> Constructor: Request URI: /Tire_Results_By_Size/
- Apply the new filter to the new profile

Good luck,

Hi.

Good article. I'm trying to implement.

I have pages that are of the following structure: /Tire_Results_By_Size/265/70/17 and /Tire_Results_By_Size/31/10.5/15

I want to group all /Tire_Results_By_Size/ so that I can look at Entrance Paths of all /Tire_Results_By_Size/ pages. I have a number of situations like this. This is just one example.

I would like to combine criteria to have output following this logic:

IF source page(s) = /Tire_Results_By_Size/265 OR /Tire_Results_By_Size/31
THEN output page = /Tire_Results_By_Size/

How would I use your filter to rewrite two (or more) URLs into a single, new URL?

Hi Erie,

Thank you for your comment. IN addition to misspellings, we are seeing many companies are building "microsites" with unique URLs for specific to a campaign or to a product launch or to an event, or to create an authority site about a subject. For example, we work with a number of non-profits and they launch microsites with domain names associated with a disease or a disaster or a cause they are supporting. I am seeing the same practice used by politicians, even in local elections :).

I think this trend will grow, especially with the increased integration of offline and online (and mobile).

Thanks,
Feras

For most businesses I would say having multiple domains is overkill. Unless your business is getting type in traffic or is receiving most of its traffic through offline marketing strategies. In that case, the most useful domains to acquire would be misspellings of your main domain.

Hello Nikki,

Would you please provide us with some URLs of pages that you like to group.

Also, what do you mean by "content may be duplicated across several sections of the website and not in specific or logical groups"? Are you saying same page belong to more than one department? example please?

Hi Nikki,

Our approach is based on the URL and hopefully the URLs on your website make it possible to group in such a fashion.

If not, there is another approach to consider.
Google Analytics just came out with Multiple Custom Variables, which include page level tags that can be deployed.
I think it might be similar to what you currently have deployed.
With the page level tags, we would get a summary in GA of how many times each type of page level tag was viewed, and this should be the same as the number of times content was viewed for each department.
